Mbandaka, Also known as Coquilhatville, Is a city located in the northwestern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Formerly known as Zaire. It is the capital city of Equateur Province and is situated on the banks of Congo River. The city has a population of approximately 1 million people. The history of Mbandaka dates back to the late 19th century when it was founded by Belgian explorer Camille-Aimé Coquilhat. The city served as an important trading center for ivory and rubber during Belgian colonial rule, Which lasted until 1960 when DRC gained independence.
