Rivne is a charming city located in western Ukraine, On the banks of the Ustia River. It is the administrative center of Rivne Oblast and has a population of over 240, 000 people. The city boasts a rich history and culture that dates back to medieval times. It is known for its beautiful parks, Historic landmarks, And vibrant nightlife. One of the most notable attractions in Rivne is the Old Castle (Staraya Fortetsya), Which was built in the 14th century as a fortress to protect against Mongol invasions.

    Noteable History

    1. Rivne has a significant Jewish history, with a large Jewish community calling the city home before World War II. Unfortunately, the city is also known for its tragic Holocaust history as the Nazis established a ghetto in Rivne where thousands of Jews were confined before being sent to concentration camps.
    2. During World War II, Rivne was occupied by Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1944. The war caused extensive damage to the city and resulted in many deaths and forced evacuations.
    3. Ivan Franko was a famous Ukrainian writer, poet, and political activist who lived in Rivne for several years. He is considered one of Ukraine’s most important literary figures.
    4. Taras Shevchenko was another prominent Ukrainian writer and artist who had ties to Rivne. His poetry often dealt with themes of national identity and freedom which resonated with Ukrainians during their struggle for independence in the 19th century.
    5. Volodymyr Vynnychenko was a Ukrainian writer, politician, and statesman who served as Ukraine’s first Prime Minister after it gained independence from Russia in 1917. He lived in Rivne for several years before his death.
    6. Anna Yaroslavna spent much of her childhood at her father’s court located in Rivne. She later married King Henry I of France in 1051.
    7. The Volhynian massacres occurred between July-August 1943 when ethnic cleansing of Poles took place by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) along with other Ukrainian groups resulting in between 35,000-60,000 Polish deaths. Rivne was one among other cities where these events took place.

    Sports Teams

    1. FC Veres Rivne: This football club was founded in 1957 and has played in various Ukrainian leagues. In the 2019-2020 season, they played in the Ukrainian Premier League.
    2. BC Dnipro-Rivne: This basketball club was founded in 1995 and has played in different Ukrainian leagues. They won the Ukrainian Cup twice (in 2003 and 2004) and reached the final of the FIBA Europe Cup Challenge (now known as FIBA Europe Cup) in 2006.
    3. HC Rivne: This ice hockey club was founded in 1961 and has participated in various Soviet/Russian/Ukrainian leagues. They won the championship of Ukraine once (in 1996).
    4. VC Niva-Voznesensk: This volleyball club was originally from Voznesensk but moved to Rivne after some time. They have played mostly at lower levels of Ukrainian volleyball.
    5. RSKV Rovno: This korfball club (a mixed-gender team sport similar to basketball/netball) was founded relatively recently, around 2010-2011, but quickly became one of the strongest korfball clubs not only in Ukraine but also internationally by winning several European competitions.
