Tāluqān is a city situated in the northern province of Takhar, Afghanistan. It has a population of approximately 200, 000 people and is located on the banks of the Kunduz River. The city has a long history dating back to ancient times and was once an important center for trade between Central Asia and South Asia. During the Soviet-Afghan War, Tāluqān suffered extensive damage due to bombing campaigns and saw significant fighting between Soviet forces and mujahideen fighters. Despite ongoing security challenges in neighboring provinces, Tāluqān has been relatively stable in recent years.

The city is well-known for its beautiful gardens which have been maintained since ancient times. Visitors can also explore the main bazaar where they can find traditional crafts such as carpets, Embroidered fabrics, Pottery as well as fresh fruits and vegetables grown in nearby fields. One notable historical site near Taloqan is Takht-e Rustam fortress which dates back to pre-Islamic times when it served as a strategic military outpost for Persian emperors who ruled over this region.   3. In the 16th century, Tāluqān became part of the Safavid Empire before falling under Uzbek Khanate’s control.
  4. Dost Mohammad Khan captured Tāluqān in 1829 and designated it his capital during his reign as Emir of Afghanistan.
  5. During the Anglo-Afghan Wars (1839-1919), Afghan forces used Tāluqān as a significant military base against British troops.
  6. Taliban forces overtook Tāluqan in 1997 during their offensive against Northern Alliance troops led by Ahmad Shah Massoud.
  7. Ahmad Shah Massoud is among one of the most prominent figures associated with Taloquan as he was born in Panjshir Valley nearby and led resistance against Taliban rule until his assassination in September 2001.
  8. Other notable personalities from Taluquan include Habibullah Kalakani who briefly served as King of Afghanistan in 1929 and Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi who served as Deputy Prime Minister under President Hamid Karzai from 2004 to 2010.
