Tororo is a town located in the Eastern region of Uganda, Approximately 180 kilometers from the capital city, Kampala. The town is situated at an altitude of 1, 200 meters above sea level and has a population of over 50, 000 people. Tororo is known as the Rock City due to its unique rock formations that are scattered throughout the area. One of the main attractions in Tororo is Nyangole Hill. This hill offers visitors a stunning view of Lake Victoria and Mount Elgon.

  3. Idi Amin, the former Ugandan dictator had a military base in Tororo during his regime from 1971-1979.
  4. On October 9th, 1962, Tororo celebrated Uganda’s independence from British colonial rule along with other towns.
  5. John Akii-Bua was born near Tororo in Soroti district and became an Olympic gold medalist for Uganda in the 400m hurdles at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
  6. Bishop James Hannington is remembered as one of the earliest Christian missionaries who came to East Africa through Kenya en route to Buganda Kingdom but was killed by Kabaka Mwanga II’s men along with his companions at Kyando Mugenyi near Busoga kingdom which is close to present-day Tororo district on October 29th,1885
  7. Teso-Nyiro Rebellion (1950-1963) took place during British colonial rule when Teso people protested against forced labor policies imposed by colonial authorities.
  8. Eriya Kategaya hailed from Bukedi region where he attended school at St Peter’s College,Tororo before joining Makerere University where he studied Law.He served as Vice President of Uganda from May 2011 until his death on March 1st,2013 due to pulmonary embolism.
