Zhangping is a county-level city located in the Fujian province of China. The city is situated on the banks of the Jiulong River, Which flows through the region and provides a stunning backdrop to its picturesque scenery.   1. During the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Zhangping was a significant hub for trade and commerce.
  2. Chen Jinggu (1763-1810) was a renowned female warrior who led a rebellion against the Qing Dynasty and was born in Zhangping.
  3. The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864) had a profound impact on Zhangping, as it was one of the areas affected by this major civil war that resulted in millions of deaths.
  4. Mao Zedong (1893-1976), the founder of the People’s Republic of China, visited Zhangping during his Long March in 1935.
  5. Lin Zexu (1785-1850), a prominent scholar-official who played an essential role in China’s Opium Wars and served as governor of Fujian province, which included Zhangping.
  6. Huang Xing (1874-1916) spent time in exile in Japan and later returned to China to fight against imperial rule as one of the leaders of the Chinese Revolution; he had connections with Zhangping.
  7. Many historical buildings were destroyed or damaged during Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution campaign to eliminate traditional culture and customs from 1966 to 1976.
  8. Liu Xiaobo(1955–2017), a Chinese writer and human rights activist who won Nobel Peace Prize for his work died after being imprisoned for years by Chinese government; he had some connection with nearby Fuzhou city where he studied at Fujian Normal University.
